If you want a calm place that's easy to reach from Cancún, with beach, snorkeling, MUSA and day tours, I'd pick Isla Mujeres. Cozumel is better for serious diving and has more services. Holbox is more remote and natural, and takes longer to reach. Cancún and Costa Mujeres are a different kind of trip, more hotel and resort.
Isla Mujeres or Cozumel
Cozumel is a much larger island, with its own airport, more hotels and services, and prices that tend to be higher. You reach it from Playa del Carmen, and there's no direct ferry between the two islands. Isla Mujeres is small, you get around by golf cart and it's very close to Cancún.
For serious diving, most divers prefer Cozumel: its best-known sites are on the more sheltered side and have a reputation as some of the best in the Caribbean. Isla Mujeres is great if you're starting out or want something lighter: MUSA and Manchones reef can be seen snorkeling or with a tank, and we offer diving for beginners and certified divers. If snorkeling is your thing, read our snorkeling guide for Isla Mujeres. Both islands have good snorkeling; in Isla Mujeres, MUSA, Manchones and El Farito stand out, and you visit them by boat.
Isla Mujeres or Holbox: how to get there and which to pick
Holbox is more remote and natural: sand streets, little infrastructure and a very quiet atmosphere. You reach it through Chiquilá and it takes much longer; expect 2 to 3 hours from Cancún. Isla Mujeres is a short crossing from Cancún and has more restaurants and bars.
Both islands run whale shark tours in summer, from June to September. From Isla Mujeres you can combine it with reef snorkeling and Isla Contoy; see our whale shark tour. My summary: Holbox wins on nature, and Isla Mujeres on reefs, diving and ease of access.
Isla Mujeres or Cancún: where to stay
Cancún is a big city with an airport, the Hotel Zone, nightlife and many tours. Isla Mujeres is a short boat crossing away and has a much slower pace. Many people stay in Cancún and visit the island for a day; in what to do in Isla Mujeres in one day we share an itinerary.
If you want nightlife, shopping malls and the biggest choice of hotels, go with Cancún. If you'd rather walk, drive a golf cart and end the day with a sunset, Isla Mujeres fits better.
Isla Mujeres or Costa Mujeres
Costa Mujeres is a new area of luxury resorts north of Cancún, quiet and gated. It's ideal if you plan to spend most of your time at your resort. Isla Mujeres isn't a resort zone: it's an island with a town, a public beach and tours, where you walk, eat and get around on your own.
They can share the same trip: stay in Costa Mujeres and spend a day in Isla Mujeres with a snorkel or a sunset cruise.
