You can dive in Isla Mujeres even if it's your first time underwater, and also if you're already certified. The most popular dives are MUSA and Manchones reef, but there's also night diving, wrecks, PADI courses and cenotes.
What suits you depends on your experience, how much time you have and what you want to see. Here's how I'd pick.
Which diving experience fits your level?
If you've never dived
Start with Discover Scuba Diving in Isla Mujeres. You don't need a previous certification. It includes preparation, skills practice and two dives at MUSA and Manchones with a PADI instructor. It lasts 4 to 5 hours and is booked from 2 people.
If you're already certified
Certified diving in Isla Mujeres is two guided dives at MUSA and Manchones reef. It requires an Open Water certification, lasts 3.5 to 4 hours and is booked from 2 people. The service page shows the included equipment and conditions.
If you want to get certified
The PADI Open Water course in Isla Mujeres is for learning to dive and earning your first certification. The published program lasts 3 to 4 days. Already trained? Check the advanced PADI courses and their requirements.
If you want something different
Night diving lets you see the reef after dark. Wreck and cave diving and cenote diving have their own conditions, so check certification, duration, transfers and the itinerary before deciding.
What's diving like at MUSA, Manchones and the wrecks?
According to our service page, visibility is usually between 15 and 25 meters and the water is 26 to 29 °C year-round. Conditions change with the weather though, and they're not guaranteed.
If you have Advanced Open Water, wreck and cave diving visits sites such as the Cave of the Sleeping Sharks, the C-55 and C-58 wrecks or Ultrafreeze. They range from 24 to almost 30 meters deep and often have current, which is why they require that certification. Your guide confirms the site based on the day's sea conditions.
How much does it cost and what's included?
Current prices and deposits are on each service page. Inclusions vary by experience, so check equipment, number of dives, taxes and transfers for the one you want. Sea conditions can affect the route, and specific visibility is not guaranteed.
How do you book?
Open the service page and add it to your cart. At checkout you choose your date, group size and contact details, and pay the deposit online. The breakdown shows the balance you pay at check-in.
There are no same-day online bookings. Book tomorrow before 8 p.m., Cancun time; after that, the calendar allows bookings from the day after tomorrow. If your date is urgent, message us on WhatsApp before arranging anything.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a diving certification?
Not for the beginner experience. Certified diving and other dives have specific requirements listed on their service pages.
Can I fly after diving?
Plan your diving before your final day. DAN recommends a minimum preflight interval of 18 hours after multiple dives in one day or diving on several days without decompression; other profiles require longer intervals. Here's DAN's guidance on flying after diving, and always follow your instructor's directions.
Are there medical requirements?
PADI programs require a medical questionnaire; depending on your answers, a medical evaluation may be needed before participating. If you have any concerns, tell us before you book.
How deep is the beginner experience?
Up to 12 meters, the limit of the Discover Scuba Diving program. It's enough to see reefs full of life.
Does my first dive count toward the Open Water certification?
It can be credited if you continue with the Open Water course with us during the same trip. Ask when you finish your experience.
What certification do I need for the certified dive?
PADI Open Water or an equivalent from another recognized agency, such as SSI or NAUI. Bring your physical or digital card.
What if I haven't dived in a long time?
If it has been more than 12 to 18 months, we recommend a refresher before the dive. Tell us when you book and we'll arrange it.
Can I bring my own equipment?
Yes. The price includes full equipment, but if you prefer your own, tell us when you book.
What is night diving like and what certification does it need?
It requires Open Water certification or higher; the night specialty isn't required. It takes place on the reef, with flashlights included and a guide who marks the route. If you already dive comfortably by day, it's usually easier than you imagine.
What do the wrecks and caves require?
Advanced Open Water certification, because the sites range from 24 to almost 30 meters deep and often have current. Nitrox is available on request for divers certified in Enriched Air.
What is the minimum age for the PADI Open Water course?
10 years old. Those under 15 receive the Junior Open Water card, which automatically converts to Open Water at 15.
What if my trip is short?
You can complete the theory online with PADI eLearning before you arrive and finish the course in 2 to 3 days on the island. Tell us your dates and we'll build the schedule.
Can I dive in cenotes?
Yes, with Open Water certification, on cavern circuits with a specialized guide and a permanent guideline. It's a quote-based service: the price depends on the cenote, the group size and the departure point.
What should I do before diving?
Have a light breakfast and don't dive on an empty stomach. Bring your swimsuit, a towel, a hat and biodegradable sunscreen.
Where can I see all the options?
They're all in Casa Aureum's diving catalog.
Want help choosing?
Message us on WhatsApp with your date, where you're staying, how many of you are going and what experience you have. We'll tell you which one suits you.
