One day in Isla Mujeres? It's enough for a beach, a golf cart loop around the island, a good meal and, if you plan it well, a snorkel or a sunset on the water. The island is only about 7 kilometers long, so what matters is the order and getting going early.
Here's how I'd do it.
What to do in Isla Mujeres in one day: itinerary
Morning, from 8:30 or 9:00: Playa Norte
Start at Playa Norte, the island's best-known beach. Get there before 9: fewer people, the water is usually calm, and you can swim a bit or walk the shore. It's public, so bring your own towel.
If you'd rather skip the beach, breakfast downtown is a good plan too: try Rooster or Don Bigotes.
Midday: take your time over lunch
Downtown and the area near Playa Norte have plenty of options. I'd point you to Stingray, one block from the beach, or Mahaché, on Av. Guerrero. If you want to spend the afternoon by the water, Bahía del Rey is a beach club with a pool, a dock and a bar on the bay.
Afternoon: south to Punta Sur
After lunch, head south by golf cart or scooter. Punta Sur is the island's southern tip, with a lighthouse, open-sea views and a sculpture garden. My advice: leave 2 to 3 hours for the trip there, the stops and the way back, and don't rush it.
Drive slowly, with your lights on if it gets late. Before you rent, read our golf cart or scooter guide and our guide to safety in Isla Mujeres. Bring ID.
Sunset: from the water or from the beach
Close the day with the sunset. You can watch from Playa Norte or from the water on our Sunset Cruise. To see what time the sun sets by season, check Sunset in Isla Mujeres.
Can you snorkel the same day?
Yes. The Group Snorkel Tour lasts about 3 hours and departs at 12:00. If you pick it, keep the morning for the beach or the golf cart and leave the sunset for Playa Norte. To compare all the options, read the snorkeling guide.
Isla Contoy is a different story: it's a full-day tour and doesn't fit this itinerary. If it interests you, here's the Isla Contoy guide.
One day in Isla Mujeres with kids
Playa Norte has calm, shallow water, and a golf cart for 4 or 6 people lets the whole family get around. For snorkeling, the minimum age on our tours is 8, always with an adult and a life vest. Bring shade, water and time for breaks, and leave for last whatever is least urgent.
What to bring
Swimsuit on, towel, sunscreen and a hat, water, cash for tips and meals, ID if you're renting a vehicle and a light layer for the afternoon. Check the time of the last transport back early on, and don't leave it for the end.
Frequently asked questions
Is one day enough for Isla Mujeres?
For the essentials, yes: a beach, a loop around the island and the sunset. If you want snorkeling, diving or Isla Contoy, stay more days.
How do I get around the island?
By golf cart or scooter. The golf cart is the most comfortable for groups and families; our golf cart guide compares both.
How long do I need for Punta Sur?
Between 2 and 3 hours by golf cart, counting the trip there, stops and the way back.
What's the best time to get to the beach?
Early, before 9 in the morning, to enjoy it with fewer people.
