The best sunset in Isla Mujeres is seen from the water or from Playa Norte, on the north side of the island. The sun sets between 6:00 and 7:30 in the evening depending on the season, so get there early. And if you want to make it special, a private sunset cruise is what couples and celebrations pick most.
What time is sunset in Isla Mujeres?
Quintana Roo keeps the same clock all year, with no daylight saving time. That's why sunset moves more than people expect: in December it happens around 6:10 in the evening, and in June and July around 7:30. In the months in between it falls between those two times.
These are approximate times; for the exact day, check a sunrise and sunset table for Cancún or Isla Mujeres. My advice: be in place about 30 to 45 minutes early so you catch the golden light too.
Where to watch the sunset from land
Playa Norte is the recommendation that comes up most. The water is calm and shallow, so you can arrive early, swim a bit and stay for the sunset. Bring a towel, water and something for the sun, and arrive early to get a good spot.

Watching the sunset from the water
From a boat the horizon opens up completely, and in the distance you see the Cancún skyline light up. There are two ways to do it with us.
Sunset Cruise: how much it costs and what's included
The Sunset Cruise is a private cruise on a 30 to 32 foot boat for 1 to 4 people, with a guide on board. It costs MXN $7,900 per boat, whether you're 2 or 4. It includes water and margaritas, music of your choice, fruit and snacks, sunset photos and dock and park taxes.
The reference departure is at 4:30 in the afternoon and it adjusts with the season: we meet 30 minutes before golden hour. You can choose a stop near the island, snorkeling or time at Playa Norte. Check the tour page for the current price.
Private Catamaran: for groups of up to 10
The Private Catamaran is for groups of up to 10 people, with open bar, ceviche, music and a snorkel stop. It has three departures a day, and the 5:30 PM one ends with the sunset. It costs MXN $13,500 per group.
Which one should you pick?
For two to four people, a special date or a proposal, I'd go with the Sunset Cruise: it's more intimate and follows your pace. For a big group, a birthday or a send-off, the catamaran is better value per person and comes with the party included.

What if it's cloudy?
Many cloudy sunsets look great: the clouds turn amber, pink and violet. If the weather prevents sailing, the port authority decides, and we reschedule your trip at no cost.
What to bring
Comfortable clothes and a light layer for the breeze, a camera, a towel and a swimsuit if you want to swim, and biodegradable sunscreen and a hat for the first part of the afternoon.
