Magical Towns Near Cancún: Isla Mujeres, Tulum, Bacalar, Valladolid and Izamal

What they are, how to get there, how many days to give each one and when to go, from island locals

If you're planning a getaway from Cancún, start with the landscape you're craving: Isla Mujeres for beach and sea, Tulum for town life and ruins, Bacalar for time on the lagoon, Cozumel for another island, and Valladolid or Izamal if you'd rather have plazas, streets and heritage.

That's six Magical Towns, the ones I'd recommend when planning from the coast. Here's how I see each one and how I'd split your time.

What a Magical Town is (and isn't)

It's a recognition from Mexico's tourism ministry for towns with their own heritage and identity. It's a good clue for finding plazas, food and traditions, but it doesn't tell you what kind of trip you'll have.

My advice: go past the label and get specific. Do you want to walk a historic center or be in the water? An afternoon in a plaza and a snorkel day don't need the same planning.

Isla Mujeres, the island town

Getting there

From Cancún you take the ferry, and Puerto Juárez is one of the terminals. Check sailings and fares with Ultramar. If you have an activity at a set time, leave some room: buying tickets, boarding and walking to the meeting point all count.

Beach, Punta Sur and a night on the island

Downtown is great on foot: have a relaxed breakfast and wander toward Playa Norte. Punta Sur, with its cliffs, is a different mood, more about walking around and looking out over the Caribbean.

My advice for a short visit: pick one main activity and let everything else fit around it. With one night you can have dinner without watching the last ferry, and you still have another morning for the water. If you're only coming for the day, check your return first. And follow the day's swimming instructions: a photo won't tell you how the sea is.

Snorkeling and MUSA

Our group snorkel combines MUSA, Manchones and El Farito in about three hours, depending on conditions. It includes gear, a life jacket and a guide. If you're torn between snorkeling and diving, check the MUSA guide.

If not everyone in your group feels comfortable in the water, tell us before booking. Visibility and wildlife change every day.

Golf cart

To get around the south end, the four-person electric golf cart is a 24-hour rental, and there's also a six-person option. Ask about driving requirements and parking. If you'd rather not drive, agree on the taxi fare before you set off.

Tulum

Tulum is three different things: ruins by the sea, the town and cenotes. Getting to Tulum town doesn't mean you're at the archaeological site, and having a hotel doesn't give you access to every beach.

For a first visit, pick one priority: ruins in the morning and, if you have time, a meal or a cenote. If you want to see several areas, sleep there.

Our private Tulum tour takes care of the land itinerary. The base rate is for four people and includes transport; admission, guide and food are separate. From Isla Mujeres, the meeting point is in Cancún and the ferry isn't included.

Bacalar

The lagoon is the star, and I'd give it a trip of its own. With one or more nights you break up the drive and enjoy the water without doing everything as a round trip.

Before booking an outing, ask about the authorized route and conservation rules. Stromatolites are for looking at from permitted areas: don't step on the formations or enter restricted zones. Save some time to sit by the lagoon and walk through town.

Heads up: this is just travel guidance; Casa Aureum doesn't have its own Bacalar package.

Cozumel

It's another island, with its own identity and lots of sea. From the mainland, the ferry leaves from Playa del Carmen, which is a different crossing from Cancún to Isla Mujeres.

If you're going for a day, pair the crossing with one activity and leave room for the return. If diving is your thing, coordinate the dives and requirements with the center. And before buying a tour, confirm which pier it leaves from: a tour with Cozumel in the name doesn't include transport from your hotel.

Valladolid, Yucatán

This one is for walking downtown, the Calzada de los Frailes and the former convent of San Bernardino de Siena, looking at facades and eating well. I'd book one night if you want to add cenotes or archaeology. Showing up for a photo and rushing to the next stop means missing the best part.

If you're going for the day, choose one area and one extra visit, and work out your return from there. Confirm the local time for each reservation and check separately whether churches, former convents and cenotes are open.

Izamal, Yucatán

It brings the convent of San Antonio de Padua and the archaeological site of Kinich Kakmó together in one walkable visit. I'd give it a day of its own or a spot in a longer Yucatán trip, not the tail end of an already full day.

Walk the streets, leave time to eat, and follow access and photo instructions at the sites. If you combine it with Valladolid, sort out lodging and your return before booking. I'd rather have a route with time to stop than a long list seen through a car window.

How to put your route together

Long, relaxed weekend: two nights on Isla Mujeres and nothing else.

Beach and ruins: the island as your base, plus a day in Tulum.

Road trip and culture: three days toward Yucatán with Valladolid and Izamal.

Fresh water and calm: Bacalar, on its own trip.

Whatever you pick, bring a reasonable amount of cash, comfortable clothes and some patience with transfer times. Fees and schedules for archaeological sites, parks and ferries are set by third parties and change, so check them the day you're ready to buy.
