Just 30 km north of Isla Mujeres lies a national park with a strict limit of 200 visitors per day: Isla Contoy, Mexico's most protected virgin island. No hotels, no roads, no permanent inhabitants — just mangroves, untouched beaches and more than 170 bird species.
On the way, a snorkel stop at Ixlache Reef, part of the world's second-largest barrier reef system, where the water is barely a few meters deep and the coral almost reaches the surface.

Why only 200 visitors per day?
Contoy is a reserve and nesting sanctuary. The national park sets the cap to protect the ecosystem — and it's exactly what keeps the island pristine. That's why booking ahead matters.
Is sunscreen banned?
Yes, any sunscreen —even biodegradable— is banned inside the park and in the water to protect the reef. Apply it at home at least 30 minutes before arrival, or wear UV-protective clothing (rashguard) instead.
Is it a good tour for kids?
Excellent: calm beach, short trails and wildlife everywhere. It's a full-day trip, so bring some shade for the little ones.
